Summer Reading

In a 2009 government web cast, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan described summer learning loss as “devastating.” This is what researchers have often referred to as the “summer slide.” It is estimated that school summer breaks will cause the average student to lose up to one month of instruction.

To help your student avoid this slide be sure to read this summer.  There are many great titles at each level.  Check out some of the options by clicking on the link next to each level or browse some of the tips:

 

Yellow (Y) through 2Green (GG):

- Identify sight words in your environment

- Ask children to find sight words in the books that you are reading to them

- Develop a special reading time and routine while reading to your child

- Lists of books to read aloud to your child are available at the Indian Valley Public       Library
